The Tudors: Art and Majesty in Renaissance England

Renowned art historians, Franklin and Debbie, will delve into the narrative, and the aesthetic program which has become a blockbuster exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art through January 8, 2023. Tudormania has been percolating for years but it may be exploding into a craze. During its 120-year span, this dynasty transformed England from a medieval backwater to a “world power on the brink of empire” (BBC). The first Tudor, Henry VII, had no less an ambition than to end the Middle Ages and launch modernity. Having seized the throne in combat, keeping it in the family became a full-time job. His son, Henry VIII was the first uncontested English King in 90 years. Despite his homicidal repute, Henry cultivated the PR image of humanist/renaissance prince through astute patronage. Elizabeth, his daughter, never aged in her portraits, as she sought to personify Glorianna, the virgin queen, married to England, whose people were her only children. While for most of us, the Tudors are all about the drama, the Metropolitan exhibition takes a new tack: it’s all about the art.
