SPEAKER: PETER C. GOLDMARK, JR.
In the worlds of environmentalism, philanthropy, government and public service, Goldmark is a renowned presence. He has served in high visibility roles in Gov. Carey’s 1975 NY State rescue of NY City in its financial crisis, served as CEO of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the Rockefeller Foundation, and the International Herald Tribune. He has served on boards of directors including Harvard.
At age 40, he was drawn into the very private world of writing Haikus, wanting to better understand himself and the world he was in. Their “Haikus for New York City” is beautifully illustrated with drawings by his daughter Sandra Goldmark, a professor at Barnard. The Haikus in their 17 syllables are short and sharp, lovely and pungent in their delicacy and beauty, with the public man behind them only imperfectly visible.
