SPEAKER: MATTHEW GOODMAN
Matthew Goodman will discuss his recent best-Seller, “The City Game: Triumph, Scandal and a Legendary Basketball Team.” This is the dramatic story of the unlikely championshipCCNY basketball 1951 team. Mostly African-American or Jewish, they carried the City’s brightest hopes of racial harmony, social mobility and the triumph of the underdog, but
their triumph was soon followed by shocking revelations of involvement of the team in the college basketball point shaving scandal and illegal gambling. The investigations, headlines and recriminations echoed for years. An intimately familiar portrait of the NYC of the scandal.
