John Roy Price is a Rhodes Scholar and Harvard Law graduate, with impeccable moderate Republican credentials as an assistant on Governor Rockefeller’s campaigns. Price joined Daniel Patrick Moynihan and John Ehrlichman, as Special Assistant to President Nixon in the White House to develop robust domestic policies on welfare, hunger and health care. Price offers rich detail as to Nixon’s adroit political skills in navigating a precarious balance between a Democratic Congress and an increasingly conservative tide running in Republican politics, hostile to Nixon’s imaginative strengthening of the social safety net with guaranteed family income, food stamps programs, children’s nutrition programs in schools, and, amazingly, a vigorous pursuit of national health insurance decades before its adoption. Price left the White House in 1971 for a career in banking, culminating in his being President of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Pittsburgh, and he is now retired.
